A Practical Guide To Choosing Kids Furniture

Choosing furniture for your kids can be a challenge especially if you are first-time parent. If you wonder about the things that your kids might like for their rooms, it could help you a lot in choosing the right type of furnishings and decor. Don’t be surprised if your kids want color and more color in their room because it’s what will make their room stand out and truly say that they own it.

Many parents are usually strapped on cash these days and their remedy to fill in the missing pieces of furniture is by either refurbishing an old one or purchase from a garage sale. There is nothing wrong with these solutions if you are truly trying to budget everything. You can make the items new by refurbishing, repainting and repairing them. Making the furniture sturdy and safe should also be your main goal to assure that your kids will be safe using them.

If you have the money to spend it is easier to plan and purchase the furniture and other items you need for your kids’ rooms. You can always be practical even if you have spare cash in your wallet. By taking time in knowing what your kids would need for their room you’re sure to buy the right stuff that will benefit your kids.

First things to do are to plan and to jot down the purpose of the items you’re going to get for your kids. These days you’ll often hear many parents saying that storage and purpose play important roles in a kid’s room. Designers follow that trend and reinvent the used-to-be mundane items such as the toy chest, study table set and bunk beds among others so that parents and kids can enjoy the full benefits of these furnishings.

Second thing to do is to measure the size of the room so won’t overstuff or under-furnish it. By knowing the dimensions of the room, you can easily plan and select the right size of furniture when it’s time to purchase them.

Third, stick on the number of furniture that you’ll buy so as not to overspend and overstuff your kid’s room.

So what should you get for your kids?

Get a good-sized bed and dresser for your kid. These two are the most important pieces and they are usually the largest to have in a kid’s room. Make sure that the bed can accommodate your child until he/she reaches early adolescent. Some parents make a mistake of buying the fancy-looking children’s bed only to find themselves buying another bed once the child has grown up.

Think of storage and functional items that your kid would need as he/she grows. He/She will need storage for toys, books and school items. Think of a spot in the room where your kid can play, relax and enjoy. You can create that space, even if it’s just a small one, by adding some small pieces of furniture there such as a lazy boy or bean bag to sit on, an area rug or carpet where he/she can put out all the toys while sitting on the floor.

A study table and chair set is appropriate if your kid is already going to school. You can find study table sets that have drawers and additional storage for books and other stuff. Some sets are also dual-purpose and can accommodate a desktop computer, complete with spaces and drawers for computer peripherals.

Other smaller furniture such as shoe rack, an extra chair or bench and a small cabinet or dresser for his/her extra clothes can be good additions to your kid’s room.

Don’t be afraid to plan and purchase your kid’s room furniture because it is a fun thing to do with your entire family. Listen to your child and ask his/her opinion about the color scheme and style that can match his/her personality. The important part of it all is the fun and enjoyment of putting together a cool room for your little one.

If you’re the designer type, enjoy adding unique expressions in your home, then you’re probably excited about the prospect of adding interesting elements to your child’s room or playroom. In fact, even if you’re not adept with designing unique styles, you can make minor adjustements to have that lasting effect in your child’s room.

The options are endless when it comes to customization, you can paint, add wall paper, or other designs to walls for extra color and patterns. After that comes perhaps the most important elements, and those which can last generations.

The furniture your pick for your kids is particular to who they are as individuals, but also based on the overall look and feel of the room. Albeit, the point of a place for your child to have to call their own is to customize for them, but it doesn’t hurt to add your own impressions.

Sometimes it’s two kids and not one sharing a room, or in a playroom multiple friends visiting over and over. You’ll want pieces of furniture that not only last, but have a quality that is transferable to different personalities. Simple but quality wood furniture for kids rooms is a safe bet. The question is what to get?

Well there are plenty of cheap and plastic alternatives, but lasting impressions are made with quality wooden built pieces. You can usually pick stained or basic colors for your furniture needs. Full pieces of wood are very different than particle boards that appear to be wood but damage easily, are brittle, and when wet can warp.

You should think about which pieces of furniture you want to invest for your kids room. Not everyone can afford all sorts of different pieces, so be selective to your child’s particular needs. Here are some example we can think of.

Maybe you have an athlete, to start off they’ll want a lasting rocking chair (well perhaps they don’t know they want one but you’d like surprise them!) Instead of the usual wooden horse, perhaps a car shaped rocker would do the trick. Or perhaps instead of a large furniture item you want to customize. Consider getting small things like a sport shaped piggy bank (shaped like the ball used in the sport of your choice.)

Maybe you’ll want something that can be used over and over again like kids tables and chairs. Perhaps a wooden vanity for your baby girl. All kids and definitely parents enjoy tracking the growth in height. Find the write growth chart for your child’s room and keep it forever!

All in all, depending on your budget, find pieces of furniture that are quality, made of solid wood, hopefully customizable to some degree, and will be enjoyed for years to come by your special little ones.

How To Select Child Furniture

January 21, 2010 by Disney Cars Room Decor
Filed under Decor Tips and Info

It’s a common dilemma: decorating a toddler nursery with the right child furniture. Your child’s outgrown teddy bears and pastel ribbons, and is ready for a motif that looks more “grown up” but still retains that sense of innocence. You also want kid furniture that’s as practical as it is pretty. After all, your child’s grown more active and curious. He loves to play, read, and occasionally subject his toys to the loud banging and kicking (”but it’s part of the game, Mommy!”).

Design
The first step is to decide on a theme. Look at your child’s personality and personal preferences. Does he love cars or animals, cowboys or aliens? Is she fascinated with fairy tales or stories of jungle safaris? If you’re not sure, then narrow the choices to two and let your child pick—the room becomes more special if he “helped” put it together.

Functionality
When buying child furniture, check functionality and design. The stools should be sturdy, and use non-leaded paint. Look for surfaces that are easy to wipe clean and rounded corners (or invest in plastic safety clamps). Desks should be spacious enough to hold paper and crayons, tea sets or books—after all, this is your child’s “work space”. Special bonuses are shelves or compartments where you can store small boxes for art materials, puzzle pieces and other knick knacks.

Safety
The advantage of buying specialty children’s furniture is that you’re more or less assured that they have met safety regulations and are built for a child’s proportions (at least he won’t tip over as he tries to scramble up a chair!). And of course, the attractive design encourages the child to sit and play. This is his table, his chair, and for toddlers, that sense of ownership is a huge factor in building self-esteem. He is growing more independent, and the role of parents is to provide just enough freedom in a safe environment—like a room where everything is child-friendly. Here he can be left alone for hours, learning to play independently and explore on his own, without mommy constantly worrying that he’ll break something (or his neck). That alone makes investing in specialty child’s furniture worthwhile.

Your Furniture Checklist

Tables and chairs – This encourages your child to spend hours drawing, writing, reading, or engaging in pretend play (like inviting her teddy bears for afternoon tea). Think of this set as the stage for your child’s creativity. With no table or chair, your child will be forced to do these activities on the floor—hunched over, or lying on his stomach. This is tiring and ultimately bad for his posture.

Book cases – To encourage a child’s love for reading, books must be kept accessible. He should be able to grab a book whenever he wants to, and then put the book back himself (unless you want to develop the habit of picking up after him each time!)

Toy storage – Toys can get lost or broken if they are left willy-nilly on the floor. The best toy storage should have different compartments to segregate the various items in his ever-growing collection. Teaching your child to organize toys (stuffed animals on one shelf, blocks on another) also helps him develop abstract thinking.

Child Desk – Children need a place of their own to work on arts and crafts or homework. A child desk is a perfect addition to any room and allows your child their own work area.

Buying Children’s Furniture Online
Furniture shopping with kids in tow is about as much fun as getting a tooth pulled. To add insult to injury, with gas prices at $3 a gallon or more, to say it is cost prohibitive is a bit of an understatement. So, selecting and purchasing the perfect theme room for your child is a challenge at best.

The children’s furniture market is the fastest growing segment of the furniture market with billions a year being sold. This has brought about an increase in specialty manufacturers catering to this market segment. Today, chances are if you can think of the theme for children’s furniture, you can find it being sold on the Internet.

Spending an evening in front of the computer searching on kid bedroom themes with your child can be a perfect way to solve this problem. Your child will feel like they are contributing to the family decision-making process while you can easily (and without a full tank of gas) prescreen the selections you show them to fit your needs. Kid furniture should be economical and made of quality construction. It should also be aesthetically pleasing and functional. Most importantly, it needs to be fun thereby, creating an environment that conveys your child’s unique personality and your unique style.

The bottom line is that before getting into the car to go browsing for child furniture, which in your child’s mind is the equivalent to torture, spend an evening with a bag of popcorn in front of the computer as a family. You’ll save money and turn a laborious process into something fun for the entire family and might even learn something new about your child in the process.

Bean Bags Chairs Make Great Kids Furniture

I had forgotten just how comfortable bean bags are. I just recently purchased a kids beanbag chair for my granddaughter and tried it out – just to bring back old memories. Beanbags are the funkiest type of chairs and the comfort is unbelievable. Bean bags are actually very conducive to good health of ones back and spine in that the bags prevent any excess stress. This prevents any long or short term damage to ones back joints and ones health in general, just right for kids growing up.

Beanbags chairs make great furniture that is flexible enough to support ones back, regardless of their position.

Bean bags are

Comfortable to sit in while watching TV or just hanging out

Fun to play on, kids love to romp and roll on them

They are colorful and come in many different styles and materials

Long lasting and hard wearing

Make great furniture

Can be used anywhere

My granddaughter has already learned to jump from the sofa onto the soft chair and takes great delight in doing so. Bean Bags chairs are full of soft filler and because Bean Bags chairs are frameless, there are no hard edges or sharp corners for a child to bump into. The urethane foam inside is said to last much longer than those “beans” which the old style bean bags contained when I was growing up. It is the urethane foam that is responsible for the chair having that soft, spongy and shapeable effect. I am certain that this chair will provide her with many years of fun and comfort.

Bean Bags are easy to clean. The kid’s bean bag chair that we bought has a removable cover as do many quality bean bag chairs. When the kids spill their grape juice all over it, don’t worry too much about it being ruined. All you have to do is to wipe away the mess from the Bean Bag chair before it dries. If you didn’t see the accident, then it is a simple matter of unzipping the cover and washing.

Many kids chairs are filled with polystyrene beads and some models feature cores that come with a child-resistant, locking zipper, making refilling easier while protecting your child by keeping them out of the filling.

Even though she is old enough to climb up onto the couch by herself, she now prefers her own place to sit.

Make your children happy and surprise them with this adorable, fun and very comfortable for seating Kids Bean Bags. Choose any of these decorative and imaginative beanbag chairs for all the kids in your life.

After a fun day of play our granddaughter will settle down to watch TV or read a book on her beanbag chair. She loves the comfort and fun of her own bean bag chair.

I can still see the look of surprise and the laughter when she first tried her bean bag chair. I think I’ll get one and join her on the floor.
